IANSA publications

Since 1998 a wide range of publications and resource materials have been produced by the IANSA Network. Production has been possible with donations and grants and all publications are produced on a non-profit basis by a small staff, including interns and volunteers who have assisted with translations and at various other levels within the production process.

Small Arms and Gender-Based Violence in Montenegro 30 October 2007

This study provides research into the impact of the presence of arms on the lives of women, in particular on gender-based violence involving arms. NGOs in Montenegro often draw attention to criminal offences in which women are exposed to violence involving arms: domestic violence, sexual assaults and trafficking. The data obtained from the Police Directorate reveals yet another aspect of violence against women: criminal offences against the life and integrity of a person committed with the use of firearms.

When Men Murder Women: An Analysis of 2005 Homicide Data 31 August 2007

An annual report prepared by the Violence Policy Center detailing the reality of homicides committed against women. The study analyzes the most recent Supplementary Homicide Report (SHR) data submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This is the first analysis of the 2005 data on female homicide victims to offer breakdowns of cases in the 10 states with the highest female victim/male offender homicide rates, and the first to rank the states by the rate of female homicides.

Involving Men in the Implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security 07 March 2007

This report is based on a discussion held in conjunction with GAPS and the High Commission for Canada on involving men in the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325. It focuses on how and why SCR 1325 is relevant to men, as well as broader efforts to build sustainable peace. It explores strategies to increase their engagement with work around SCR 1325 at the UK and international levels.

This paper explores the role of guns in violence against women in South Africa, drawing on three datasets: one investigating the implementation of the Domestic Violence Act, the second exploring gang rapes, and the third documenting intimate femicide.

Hitting the Target: Men and Guns 31 May 2006

Explores the diverse roles that men and boys play in relation to guns - as perpetrators, victims, survivors and agents of change - and suggests the need to encourage more positive and peaceful expressions of masculinity.

Women and girls in contexts of armed violence: a case study of Rio de Janeiro 31 May 2006

This series of articles examines the different roles played by women and deconstructs the widely-held gendered stereotypes linking peace and femininity, versus violence and masculinity.

Few Options but the Gun: Angry Young Men 31 May 2006

This paper reviews the principal theories on why young men are more likely to turn to armed violence than other demographic groups. It argues that small arms can be an important part of this complex social equation and examines how the functional and symbolic attributes of small arms make them attractive for young men wishing to achieve power through association with or participation in violence. The final section reviews opportunities to address the problem by controlling young men’s access to small arms and countering their espousal of a violent masculine ideology.
