Domestic violence gun measure signed by governor

26 June 2009

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A proposal that creates a procedure for individuals subject to an order of protection for domestic violence to turn over their weapons has been signed by the governor.

The measure was signed by Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen on Wednesday and will take effect on July 1.

There is currently no procedure for respondents to relinquish their weapons while the order is in effect.

This measure establishes a process that includes giving them 48 hours to hand the weapons over to anyone not prohibited from possessing firearms.
