UN Call for Good Practices to Prevent Violence Against Women

18 January 2011

Thanks to WUNRN for sharing this information about the UN Call for Good Practices to Prevent Violence Against Women. This is a very good opportunity to highlight the incidence and impact of gun violence upon women, and the use of small arms in violence against women including threats and intimidation. For example, in 2009, IANSA women specifically highlighted the issue of armed domestic violence as part of the Disarm Domestic Violence campaign.

"The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is looking to receive more input from civil society and national human rights institutions regarding the report requested by Human Rights Council Resolution A/HRC/RES/14/12 which was adopted in June 2010 and entitled 'Accelerating efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women: ensuring due diligence in prevention'.

Under the resolution, the Office was requested to prepare a compilation of good practices in efforts aimed at preventing violence against women, in consultation with the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, States, civil society and other relevant stakeholders, and to present a report thereon a the 17th session of the Human Rights Council.

The Office of the High Commissioner would be grateful to receive any relevant information for the preparation of this compilation, including information on any assessment of the effectiveness and impact of such practices aimed at preventing violence against women.

This information, with a maximum of 5 pages, should be sent to the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights via regular mail, fax or email (United Nations Office at Geneva, CH 1211 Geneva 10; fax +41 22 917 90 08; email registry@ohchr.org) before 4 February 2011 in English, French or Spanish. Enquiries may be made to aflores@ohchr.org. The organisation/institution/individual submitting information will be acknowledged as having done so in the report.
