Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence: 16-21 September 2013

15 September 2013

This year’s Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence is underway! Held from the 16-21 September 2013, the dates have been chosen to coincide with the commemoration of the International Day of Peace which is 21 September.

Traditionally, the Week of Action is a time to highlight the international campaign to stop the proliferation and misuse of small arms and light weapons. Over the years, participation during the Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence (GWoA) has grown, with more than 200 IANSA members in over 100 countries participating. Activities have ranged from signature/petition collections, lobbying officials, using sports stars or public figures to promote Gun-Free campaigns and promoting the Disarm Domestic Violence campaign.

‘Local action for global effect’ means that each small action we take at community level when combined, becomes another global campaign with resounding success. Let us therefore seize the opportunity!!

The themes for the Week of Action 2013 are:
1) ‘Get the guns off the streets’
2) Disarm Domestic Violence
3) Lock up the guns: Stockpile management

Gender, women’s and survivors' participation are cross cutting issues that will be highlighted across all themes.
