Gun violence and the MDGs: Statement by Angela Kane, the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs

19 September 2013

As the Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence continues, Angela Kane, the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, has issued a statement which highlights how armed violence is profoundly impeding the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Of particular note is the reference to the High-level Panel advising on the future MDGs which has called for a "fundamental shift – to recognise peace and good governance as a core element of well-being." In addition, there is an acknowledgement that "effectively implementing small arms control is especially important."
