The Fifth Biennial Meeting of States (BMS 5) to Consider Implementation of the Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons (PoA) will take place at the United Nations in New York from 16–20 June 2014.
Ambassador Zahir Tanin of Afghanistan has been endorsed by Member States as chair-designate of BMS5.
IANSA is the official coordinator of civil society participation in the UN small arms process. Michele Poliacof remains our contact person in New York (NewYork@iansa.org).
Civil society organisations can apply for accreditation to attend the BMS. We will notify you when the accreditation process opens.
If you are interested in attending, we suggest you begin looking for funding to cover travel costs as soon as possible. In the past, many IANSA members have obtained funding from the local embassies of donor governments, from local UNDP offices or from large NGOs operating in their countries.
We will provide further advice and information over the coming months.
Please continue to lobby your governments to fulfil their commitments to the PoA and submit national reports prior to the meeting. As IANSA members, let us remain vigilant and active in helping counter the illicit trade and uncontrolled circulation of small arms and light weapons.
